Additive Manufacturing in the Automotive Industry

Analysis of a Bike Frame

Jan - May 2017

This Project was done as a part of a course titled "Modern Manufacturing Processes". The aim was to research the applications of 3D printing in the Automotive Industry. Me and my team mates came up with an idea to research the application of Additive Manufacturing in modern Bike Frames

The original concept of the Bike frame centers on having metal tubes welded at places to create a single frame on which all parts/assemblies of a bike can be fitted on to.

This process make use of conventional manufacturing methods which is quite efficient but may lead to heavier frames. The use of aluminum/carbon fiber material can reduce the weight, but metal printing processes can give an entirely new direction to optimizing this problem. We came up with a few designs and analysed the frame with its pros and cons.
