Manual Transmission based on T5 Borg Warner Transmission System
This project shows the working of a 5 speed manual transmission based on the T5 System. Manual transmissions are characterized by gear ratiost hat are selectable by locking selected gear pairs to the output shaft inside the transmission. Contemporary automobile manual transmissions typically use 4 to 6 forward gears and one reverse gear.
The model shown in the project utilizes a constant mesh gearbox. Most of the gearboxes are synchromesh nowadays, for the simplicity of designing I modelled it using the constant mesh type gearbox. In a constant mesh gearbox, the gears are in a constant mesh with each other unlike the sliding mesh gearbox. Dog clutches are used to engage and disengage particular gears on the driven shaft, whereas in a synchromesh a synchronizer unit is used.
This was an individual project done by me during my 6th semester of undergrad. I studied the T5 transmission and based on my understanding of the concept I modeled this project using SolidWorks.
